In collaboration with Fors Blomqvist Architects and Talli Oy, we have started the outdoor design for Maatulli School. The project is based on an open competition winning proposal called The Forest Glade (Metsäaukio), located in the northern part of Helsinki.

The project aims to integrate nature into everyday learning and play, focusing on creating natural learning environments characterized by safe, playful surroundings. The rebuilding school and yard’s planning phase is ongoing, and the construction will begin in 2022.

Surrounded by inspiring nature, Maatulli School will have new recreational routes waived through the landscape and culminate in the new schoolyard. The project emphasizes the values ​​of the site’s existing vegetation by supporting its biodiversity and rainwater management.

The schoolyard will be both a play and learning environment where educational activities will take place. In addition, the heart of the project, The Metsäaukio, a circular green courtyard, offers year-round nature experiences for students to enjoy.
