MASU teamed up with Kengo Kuma & Associates and M-Teampannon for the architectural competition of Nyugati railway station in Budapest, Hungary. 

Budapest Nyugati railway station is one of Hungary’s most significant railway monuments and business transport intersections. And therefore, the most valuable development area of Budapest’s inner city.

The new master plan unfolds various strategies to reconnect the Nyugati transportation hub with the surrounding city. It intersects human activities and nature along a green backbone; The Nyugati linear park.

The Nyugati linear park is first and foremost a metropolitan system of parks, portraying the transformation of Budapest’s brownfields. Inspired by the site’s history, the linear park will be more than a green patch. It will transform into a palimpsest of rich and diverse natural ecosystems, climate adaptation measures, and recreational and breathing spaces in the bustling city.

Starting at the meeting point between the historical and future Nyugati station halls. The rail gardens park becomes the gateway to the new Nyugati linear park system.

On the southern side of the tracks, it is prolonged by The geothermal park. Through decontamination and terrain transformation, former tracks become outdoor geothermal baths, water canals or retention and detention ponds.

The parks not only maximize nature and provide climate adaptation but also create outstanding destinations. Hence, attracting city residents and visitors while connecting the Nyugati station to a vaster area through its larger green infrastructure.
